McReynolds to be honored as SEC legend

Former Arkansas baseball All-American Kevin McReynolds will be honored at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament as part of the inaugural group of SEC Baseball Legends, it was announced by the league office on Thursday.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former Arkansas baseball All-American Kevin McReynolds will be honored at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament as part of the inaugural group of SEC Baseball Legends, it was announced by the league office on Thursday.

McReynolds was a three-year letterwinner for the Razorbacks from 1979-81. McReynolds earned All-America and All-Southwest Conference honors in 1980 and 1981 and was also named Most Valuable Player of the 1980 Southwest Conference Tournament. During his freshman year of 1979, McReynolds helped the Razorbacks to the first College World Series appearance in program history. He earned College World Series all-tournament team recognition after helping Arkansas to a second-place finish.

McReynolds appeared in 151 games at Arkansas and posted a career batting average of .337 with 33 home runs and 121 RBI. He ranks tied for 10th in school history in career homers and third in career slugging percentage with a .642 mark.

Following his collegiate career, McReynolds became the first Arkansas player to be drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft as he was the sixth overall pick by San Diego Padres. McReynolds went on to play 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, playing for the Padres, the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals during his professional career.

Legends from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia will be recognized at this year’s tournament. Four legends will be recognized each year, with representatives from Auburn, LSU, Kentucky and Missouri set to be honored in 2013.

Each SEC Baseball Legend will have on-field recognition and awards presentation by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive on Saturday, May 26, during the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. Fans will have an opportunity for autographs and photos with the honorees on the concourse immediately following. The Legends will also participate in the annual SEC Youth Clinic on Friday morning.

The 2012 SEC Baseball Tournament will be held May 22-27 at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.
