FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After winning two of three games on the road at Mississippi State last weekend, No. 3 Arkansas looks to continue its success away from home this weekend as it travels to Baton Rouge, La., to face No. 15 LSU. Game times for the weekend series are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Each game of the weekend series will be televised. Friday’s game will be available on CSS, CST and ESPN3, Saturday’s game will be shown by ESPNU and Sunday’s contest will be televised by CST and also available to subscribers on RazorVision. Also, all three games of the series will be available on the Razorback Baseball Radio Network from IMG. Three-time Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year Chuck Barrett will call the action.
The Razorbacks are 22-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas is coming off a series win at Mississippi State last weekend, winning two of three games against the Bulldogs. After losing the opener, Arkansas responded by winning game two, 8-0, and the series finale, 8-5, in 11 innings. Redshirt senior shortstop Tim Carver was named SEC Co-Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .400 (6-for-15) against the Bulldogs with three RBI. Junior Derrick Bleeker batted .444 last weekend with a RBI. Bo Bigham and Jimmy Bosco each went 4-for-10 against MSU. Bosco had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.
Matt Reynolds leads Arkansas at the plate with a .361 batting average with three homers and a team-best 19 RBI. Carver is hitting .348 with 15 RBI and a team-leading 12 stolen bases, while Dominic Ficociello is batting .326 with two homers and 16 RBI. Sam Bates and Jimmy Bosco are each hitting .318. Bates has hit a team-leading five homers and 18 RBI, while Bosco has two round-trippers and 16 RBI.
Junior right-handed pitcher DJ Baxendale will start the series opener for the Razorbacks on Friday night. Baxendale is 5-1 on the season with a 4.15 ERA. Sophomore righty Ryne Stanek will get the nod in the middle game of the series on Saturday evening. Stanek, who has won eight consecutive starts dating back to last season, is 6-0 in 2012 with a 1.25 ERA. He leads the SEC in wins and ranks second in the league in ERA. Arkansas has not announced a starter for Sunday’s series finale.
In relief, Barrett Astin has pitched in 11 games this season and has a 2-0 record with a team-leading six saves and a 0.39 ERA. Colby Suggs has appeared in a team-high 12 games and carries a 2-0 record with a 1.69 ERA. Cade Lynch has pitched in 11 games and has two saves with a 1.17 ERA. Brandon Moore has made nine appearances, seven out of the bullpen, and is 2-0 with two saves and a 0.76 ERA.
LSU is currently 19-6 on the season and 3-3 in SEC play. The Tigers are 16-4 at home on the season. LSU was on the road last weekend and dropped two of three games at Auburn. LSU is coming off a 5-0 win against Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday night. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .302, while the LSU pitching staff has compiled a 3.07 ERA.
Junior outfielder Raph Rhymes leads the SEC with a .479 batting average and 46 hits. Rhymes also has a team-leading 28 RBI for the Tigers. Mason Katz is batting .360 on the season with a team-best five homers and 24 RBI. Ty Ross is hitting .333 with 19 RBI, while Tyler Hanover is batting .326 with 16 RBI.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman is scheduled to start the series opener on Friday. Gausman is 4-0 on the season with a 1.54 ERA. In the middle game of the series on Saturday, the Tigers will throw sophomore righty Ryan Eades, who has a 4-1 record with a 2.04 ERA. LSU has not announced a starter for Sunday’s series finale.
Out of the bullpen, Nick Goody is tied for the team lead with 14 appearances and has a 1-0 record with two saves and a 1.50 ERA. Chris Cotton has pitched in 10 games for the Tigers and has a 2-0 record with a 2.38 ERA. Joey Bourgeois is 0-1 on the year with 1.69 ERA in 11 outings, all in relief.
Arkansas and LSU have met 77 times with the Tigers holding a 51-26 edge in the series. LSU leads the series 26-10 in games played in Baton Rouge. Arkansas has won four of the last six games in the series.
