Statement from former Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino, who was terminated by AD Jeff Long Tuesday evening:

I was informed in writing today at 5:45 p.m. that I was being terminated as head football coach at the University of Arkansas.

The simplest response I have is: I’m sorry. These two words seem very inadequate. But that is my heart. All I have been able to think about is the number of people I’ve let down by making selfish decisions. I’ve taken a lot of criticism in the past. Some deserved, some not deserved. This time, I have no one to blame but myself.

I chose to engage in an improper relationship. I also made several poor decisions following the end of that relationship and in the aftermath of the accident. I accept full responsibility for what has happened.

I’m sure you heard Jeff Long’s reasons for termination. There was a lot of information shared. Given the decision that has been made, this is not the place to debate Jeff’s view of what happened. In the end, I put him in the position of having to sort through my mistakes and that is my fault.

I have hurt my wife Becky and our four children. I’ve let down the University of Arkansas, my team, coaching staff and everyone associated with the Razorback football program. As a result of my personal mistakes, we will not get to finish our goal of building a championship program. I wish that I had been given the opportunity to meet with the players and staff prior to this evening’s press conference and hope that I will be given the opportunity to give my apologies and say my goodbyes in person. We have left the program in better shape than we found it and I want the Razorback Nation to know that it is my hope that the program achieves the success it deserves.

My sole focus at this point is trying to repair the damage I’ve done to my family. They did not ask for any of this and deserve better. I am committed to being a better husband, father and human being as a result of this and will work each and every day to prove that to my family, friends and others.

I love football. I love coaching. I of course hope I can find my way back to the profession I love. In the meantime, I will do everything I can to heal the wounds I have created.

I want to thank Chancellor Gearhart, Jeff Long, the Board of Trustees, the University administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni and fans for the opportunity to serve as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas for the past 4 years. I was not given an opportunity to continue in that position. I wish that had been the case, but that was not my decision. I wish nothing but the best for the Razorback football program, the University and the entire Razorback Nation.

Sports-ethics-win-honor-values-team work-and then CONTRACT, Jeff had no other way to go but termination as the coach broke all of above. Jeff is the administrator of the program...the program is for the players/students, so what kind of message does this send- the kind you send your kids to school there to LEARN and be exposed to....the RIGHT STUFF!!

For those whining that Bobby should not have been fired, why don't you simply follow his lead? That's right - have an affair, hire your mistress for a job for which she isn't qualified, and then lie to your boss about a few things. See how long you stay employed.

boy the Uof A studdents are on here today voicing their opinion, lol all these kids need to look at the bigger picture, what kind of example is he really setting for yall, sure some will say it was on his personal time but he had a employee with with that turned out to be his mistress and the mistress was not qualified for that position anyway like the old saying goes "whats done in the dark will soon come to the light he got caught up, he made a bad decision now let him deal with HIS bad decision on his time lesson learned

566AR, you say that the students bring in millions for the U of A and get nothing in return. That shows your ignorance. What they get in return is a very fine education from some of the best educators in the nation. The U of A builds and molds the students into our future. What they get is a path to a brighter future. So shut your ignorant mouth.

I hate to say this but I dont think they should of fired Petrino yes what he did was wrong but what about the woman why does she still have her job I dont think that is fair he knows what he did was wrong and he will pay for that maybe they should of gave him a stiff fine, but I think it is so wrong that the woman on back of his back didnt get fired she should of been fired to, to me it is showing that what she did was alright, but what Petrino did was wrong. Where is the equal involvement on this? She represents the school as much as he did so negative publicity should be punished equally. So why dont yall fire teh woman who was on back of his bike to make it fair?

While I hate to see anyone out of a job, I do know that the termination wasn't without warrant. Many are saying that Petrino is a good coach and his private life should be overlooked. However, when you are in a position of authority-you are, and should be, held to a higher standard. I am a mother of an athlete. As a mother, there is no way I could have someone who behaved in the manner that Petrino did sit across from me during a recruiting process and talk of molding and shaping my son. As a woman, his actions during his private life indicate, to me, a whole new level of selfish. I pray for his family. They deserved better. I pray that he does come out of this the better husband, father, and man he hopes to be. That change can only happen if he removes his head from his hindquarters....

While it is true there is no one to blame for this but Bobby; please do not make a saint out of Jeff Long. If INTEGRITY and MORALS were the guiding points to his decision then it would have been made more than a week ago. Sure, I know several will say that he was investigating and all things have a due process. The mythical “student-athlete” that he touted as being the primary focus of concern is laughable, for 51 weeks out of the year the Razorbacks are a brand of the UA and are marketed as such. The “student-athletes” rake in millions for the parent company – the UA – and receives nothing for it. It is hypocritical of Jeff Long to say “today…it is about morals and ethics” when the rest of the time it is about business. While I personally believe that Bobby’s termination was going to be the end result all along – I cannot help but be a little sickened by Jeff Long’s performance at the press conference.

Bobby Petrino, although an excellent Coach, made some very bad decisions during his time at the UofA. Hiring his girlfriend, who is unqualified for the position to begin with, and paying her more than what someone who is qualified would make. I agree, ETHICS being instilled in the youth of today over winning Football games is much more important. Mr. Long made a decision based on the code of ethical conduct which is in the contract Coach Petrino signed. He was/is a great coach, but morals and ethics far outweigh the winning he brought to the University. He will be missed, and replaced. W.P.S ~ RAZORBACKS!
