UALR Track Coach Headed to Hall of Fame

UALR track and field head coach Milton Williams is one of eight new inductees in the class of 2013 for the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame.
LITTLE ROCK, AR – UALR track and field head coach Milton Williams is one of eight new inductees in the class of 2013 for the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame. The 19th Annual Induction Banquet will take place on Saturday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock.

“This is a well-deserved honor," said UALR Director of Athletics Chris Peterson. "Milton has touched a lot of lives in his career. He's been a great ambassador for track and field all over the country, as well as in the state of Arkansas."

"Everyone likes to be recognized by their peers for what you've accomplished,” said Williams “I felt like I was an unlikely track participant in the beginning. But I'm just very thankful for the athletes who have entrusted their careers with me, and I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to compete myself and was fortunate enough to have some accomplishments in that area."

Currently in his ninth season as head coach and 12th season overall with the UALR track and field program, Williams was named an NAIA Indoor All-American for Arkansas-Monticello in 1980 in the shot put. He won the shot put title in 1980 in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference with a throw of 50’2 ¼” (15.29m).

At the trials for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, Williams finished 14th in the shot put. Competing in the 1985 US National Championships, he finished 11th in the shot put.

Williams holds the best mark in the discus (201’9”, 61.49m) while ranking second all-time in the shot put (65’4”, 19.91m) among Arkansas natives.

Prior to UALR, Williams was head track and cross country coach at Cabot High School in his hometown of Cabot, Ark.

In his time with the Trojans, Williams has been named Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year four different times. In 2005, he was named Women’s SBC Coach of the Year while capturing the Men’s SBC Coach of the Year honor three times (2007, 2010 and 2012).

Under Williams’ tutelage, the Trojans have won 15 Individual Outdoor and eight Individual Indoor Track and Field Sun Belt Championships. In cross country, UALR won the 2005 Women’s and 2007, 2010 and 2012 Men’s SBC Championships.
