LITTLE ROCK, Ark.—The UALR women’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 season at The Jack Stephens Center with a 52-48 win over Tulsa Friday. The Trojans had two players in double-figures with senior Marian Kursh recording career and team highs of 20 points.

Kursh led the Trojans going 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. She also recorded a team-high of nine rebounds.

Karisma Tyson recorded a career-high of ten points, while Hannah Fohne recorded eight boards.

“It is kinda what I expected,” said head coach Joe Foley. “I thought we would see a few stretches of where we played well and some where we didn’t handle it very well. I think that is the way it is going to be for a little while.”

Tulsa opened the game on a 7-0 run, before Megan Williams knocked down a jumper from Fohne at the 17:24 mark. After a Golden Hurricane jumper, a three-pointer by Tyson sparked a 9-0 run by the Trojans to take the 11-9 lead.

Tulsa came within one on a three-pointer by Taleya Mayberry and regained the lead on a layup at the 10:58 mark. Both teams exchanged points, before a layup and one by Kursh started a 9-0 run for the 22-16 Trojan lead with 5:55 until the half.

In the remaining 5:28, Tulsa outscored the Trojans 6-4 to narrow the UALR lead to 26-21 at the half.

UALR opened the second half with a three-pointer by Janette Merriex from Taylor Ford. After a Tulsa free throw, a jumper by Fohne increased the lead to 31-22 at the 18:23 mark.

With 17:39 remaining, Tulsa scored six straight points to cut the UALR lead to 31-28, before Kursh scored a layup but missed an and one opportunity.

After another layup by Kursh, Tulsa went 2-of-4 from the free throw line to cut the lead to 35-30.

Over the next four minutes, UALR outscored the Golden Hurricane seven to six including five from Kursh for the 42-36 edge.

Both teams exchanged points with Tulsa cutting the lead to 47-44 on a jumper by Taylor Hooker with 2:22 remaining. The Trojans answered back with a three-pointer by Merriex.

In the remaining 1:18, Tulsa scored four-straight points, before two free throws by Merriex secured the 52-48 win.

UALR continues non-conference action on Monday as the Trojans host SMU. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
