UCA Falls 5-3 to SFA On Senior Day

CONWAY, AR - The University of Central Arkansas Bears scratched out runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings on Sunday afternoon but it wasn’t enough to overtake Stephen F. Austin in a 5-3 loss on Senior Day before a crowd of 424 at Bear Stadium.

UCA (33-16, 12-12) fell behind 3-0 after four innings and did not collect its first hit of the game until the fifth inning against SFA starter Justin Choate, who improved to 4-2 with the victory. The Bears chipped away at the deficit with its first run in the sixth on senior Forrestt Allday’s leadoff home run over the right-field fence.

After the Lumberjacks (27-25, 14-10) extended their lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, UCA got one more in the seventh as senior Garrett Brown’s RBI single scored senior Michael Marietta, who had singled to left field. The Bears made it 5-3 in the eighth on senior Blake Marchal’s sacrifice fly that brought in Jonathan Davis, who reached on an error on a long fly ball to right field.

SFA closer Brett Higginbotham earned his ninth save with a perfect ninth inning.

UCA finished with only five hits, with Marietta going 2 for 4, and Allday, Marchal and Brown picking up RBI. Junior Bryce Biggerstaff (4-3) took the loss, allowing eight hits and only two earned runs while striking out five in six innings of work.

Ten UCA seniors closed out their home careers on Sunday, including Allday, Marchal, Brown, Marietta, Ethan Harris, Caleb McClanahan, Jeffery Enloe, John Kordsmeier, Clint Green and Ethan McKinzie. UCA closed the season with a 20-6 record at home in Bear Stadium.

The Bears play their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday at UT Martin, then close out the Southland Conference season with a three-game series at league-leader Sam Houston State on Thursday-Sunday in Huntsville, Texas. The 2013 SLC Tournament is set for May 22-25 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, The top eight teams in the final regular-season standing make up the field.
