BEARS ROLL PAST WARRIORS 108-65

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears celebrated their first home game of the season by placing seven players in double figures and rolling to a 108-65 victory over old rival Hendrix College before a crowd of 1,921 at the Farris Center.

UCA (1-1) shot 55.1 percent from the field and made 12 three-pointers in topping the 100-point mark for the first time since a 107-96 double overtime win over Eastern Illinois early last season. Junior guard LaQuentin Miles topped the Bears with 17 points and 6 rebounds, shooting 8 of 13 from the field and handing out another 6 assists.

Senior Robert Crawford and junior Ryan Williams had 14 points each, while newcomer DeShone McClure was 4 of 5 from three-point range and finished with 12 points, along with senior Jarvis Garner. Ten different UCA players had assists and eight had at least one steal. UCA forced 23 turnovers and lost just nine, only three of those in the second half.

“It was a big win for our home opener,’ said third-year head coach Corliss Williamson. “I thought our guys were a little tentative early But we had a young group we put in midway through the first half and I thought they really picked the intensity up. Then we came out in the second half and were really aggressive with our defense.

“Everyone shot the ball well. We look at the Arizona State game and the jump shots weren’t falling. Of course you get back home where you’ve been working out all year long, and you get your fans behind you, that basket seems to get a little bit bigger. We were very pleased with our shooting effort tonight and hopefully that’s something we can build on and continue to get better at.’

The Bears opened up a 20-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. That lead reached 24 points twice in the half before UCA settled for a 52-30 lead at the break. Garner and McClure each had 12 points in the first 20 minutes as UCA played 11 players. The Bears were shooting 55.3 percent at the half and had already made 7 threes, three more than they made in the entire Arizona State game.

A barrage of dunks and three-pointers quickly pushed the UCA lead to as much as 40 points just six minutes into the second half. The Bears reached the 100-point mark on Daouda Berete’s layup with 5:03 left to play. Berete finished with 11 points, going 5 for 5 from the field including a three-pointer. Junior forward Jordan Harks was the other UCA player in double figures with 10 points.

Senior guard Jaren Riley topped the Warriors with 18 points.

UCA gets a break before hosting Arkansas State at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.
