UCA Soars Over the SkyHawks

MARTIN, TN - The University of Central Arkansas Bears exploded on offense for the second time this season against UT Martin and it resulted in a 16-4 victory on Tuesday at Skyhawk Field.

UCA hit a season-high four home runs and had a pair of six-run innings in scoring 16 runs against the Skyhawks for the second time in less than a month. UCA won 16-8 in Conway on April 23.

The Skyhawks (10-38) actually went ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first with a pair of hits and a UCA error. But the Bears (34-16) got one run in the second on Kraig Kelley’s RBI single, then pushed across six in the third. Senior second baseman Blake Marchal hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center. Four batters later, junior first baseman Doug Votolato added another two-run blast, his second.

Marchal picked up another RBI with a ground out in the fourth, scoring Forrestt Allday. The Bears then plated six more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. UCA had just two hits but took advantage of two UTM errors in the inning. Allday hit a two-run home run to right and junior Logan Moon added a three-run double to the gap in right center for a 14-3 advantage.

UCA, which used 13 position players and seven pitchers, scored its final run in the seventh inning on a two-run home by senior third baseman Garrett Brown. Allday was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI, whil eMoonde was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI. Votolato went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and Marchall was 1 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Seven of UCA’s 11 hits were for extra bases, with junior Jonathan Davis hitting his fifth triple of the season and Allday had his 12th double.

Senior Clint Green (3-2) pitched the second and third innings and allowed no hits for the victory. Redshirt freshman Bo Stitch, making just his second appearance of the season, pitched a perfect ninth inning, ending it with a strikeout of Taylor Cox.

UCA returns to Southland Conference play to close out the regular season on Thursday night at league-leader Sam Houston State. The SLC Tournament begins next Wednesday at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas.
