CONWAY, AR - The University of Central Arkansas swept the Southland Conference Golfer of the Year awards Monday when sophomore Pep Angles was named the SLC Men’s Golfer of the Year, joining UCA senior Julia Roth, who earned the women’s award last week.

A native of Barcelona, Spain, Angles is a two-time all-SLC selection. Angles averaged a league-best 72.60 shots in 30 rounds of play this season. In 10 tournaments, Angles finished in the top 10 six times, including a victory at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate last September. Angles earned a second-place finish in two tournaments, including at the Southland Conference Men’s Golf Championship last week in Frisco, Texas.

Angles was joined on the All-SLC team by teammates senior Austen Moix, a second-team selection, and freshman James Newton, who was a third-team honoree. Moix, from Conway, had a 74.30 average for the year, with a low round of 68 and three Top 10 finishes. Newton, from Macclesfield, England, averaged 74.77 strokes, had a low round of 67 and earned two individual victories on the season.

Angles is the first UCA male golfer to be named golfer of the year and first Bears’ golfer to win a Southland individual postseason award since Scotty Campbell was tabbed newcomer of the year in 2009. He led the Bears to a runnerup finish in last week’s SLC Championship.
