"We Believe!" Summer Camp Wins Again

The We Believe Basketball Camp is not your summertime norm - students received coaching in basketball drills as well as life skills. Additionally, free shoes, shorts, reversible jerseys and a lunch-time meal are provided to each camper.
HAZEN, AR - The third annual “We Believe!” Basketball and Life Skills Camp concluded last week with over 45 Prairie County junior and senior high school students participating in the free camp at the Hazen Gym. The We Believe Basketball Camp is not your summertime norm - students received coaching in basketball drills as well as life skills. Additionally, free shoes, shorts, reversible jerseys and a lunch-time meal are provided to each camper.

Alumni and mentors drove several hours to the Arkansas delta, even from Dallas, Texas, to talk about their life story and shared the importance of teamwork, sports and education. Most of the mentors were raised in DeValls Bluff, Hazen or Biscoe. This year’s camp also included a visit from Arkansas Baptist College and former Parkview High Coach Charles Ripley. Coach Ripley talked about 5-time NBA Champion Derek Fisher’s hard work and the three A’s: Athleticism, Attitude and Academics.

The lead basketball coaches, Lee Rhoden, Tyrone Woods, Jim Hurt and Donna Alexander ensured dribbling, passing, pivots, screens and post fundamentals were taught. Yet, several times a day ad hoc and scheduled speakers conducted a full-court press on the importance of obtaining a graduation diploma.

Former DeValls Bluff High student, camp founder and director, active duty Army Maj. Johnpaul Arnold said, “I can’t say thanks enough to the volunteers, coaches and mentors who give up their vacation time to make an impact on these students. We hope each student can maximize their opportunities, knowing that they may not put on a championship sports ring, but each student can wear an academic ring.”

Next year’s We Believe Basketball Camp for Prairie County students is scheduled for early June.
