JONESBORO, AR — Arkansas State right-hander Daniel Wright was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week after picking up a save and a complete game shutout victory the past week, the league office announced Monday.

He enjoyed one of the best pitching weeks of his collegiate career after earning his first save of the season in a 9-8 victory over Southeast Missouri on April 2 and then turned in a complete-game, shutout victory over Western Kentucky on April 5. It was the first complete-game of his career and he added a career best 11 strikeouts on the night. He yielded just five hits and did not allow a runner to advance past second base after the first inning. He also retired 12 straight batters during the game’s middle innings.

Earlier in the week he recorded his first save since the 2011 season against Southeast Missouri. Wright pitched a perfect top of the ninth to preserve a one-run victory over the Redhawks. He struck out one batter in the relief appearance and it was the fourth save of his career.

Over his last three starts, Wright has allowed just two runs and has recorded 28 strikeouts. For the year, he has struck out 59 batters, which leads the conference, and has given up just 13 earned runs. He 2.11 earned run average is also the best in the league.

The Red Wolves are in the midst of an eight-game home stand and will host Central Arkansas Wednesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Tomlison Stadium followed by a three-game series with South Alabama April 12-14.
