Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays placed infielder Maicer Izturis on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a torn lateral collateral ligament in his left knee.
The move is retroactive to April 14, one day after the veteran switch-hitter injured himself while tripping in the dugout during a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
The injury is expected to sideline Izturis between 4-to-6 months, though the shortstop has said he will seek a second opinion before opting to undergo surgery.
Izturis had started nine of Toronto's first 13 games at second base and batted .286 with one RBI and one stolen base. He had multiple hits in four of his first five contests of the season.
To replace Izturis on the roster, Toronto selected the contract of infielder Munenori Kawasaki from Triple-A Buffalo.
Kawasaki hit .229 with six doubles, five triples, one home run and 24 RBI over 96 games with the Blue Jays last season.
Also Tuesday, the Blue Jays designated pitcher Marcus Walden for assignment and outrighted pitcher Jeremy Jeffress to Buffalo.
