1st Charter School Coming to West LR

After hearing two hours of testimony from both sides on Friday, the board voted 6-2 to approve it.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- The State Board of Education has approved the first ever charter middle school after hearing two hours of testimony from both sides Friday.

The board voted 6-2 to approve it.

The new school is expected to open in the fall on Rahling Road just off Chenal Parkway in West Little Rock.

LRSD says it plans to build a middle school in West Little Rock, too, but parents say they couldn't wait three years for that to happen.

"It's going to be small, and we really look forward to the individual attention that she will receive, we look forward to the rigorous curriculum," Rachelle Bloser says. "It's five minutes from our house, so we're just elated with the decision today."

LRSD has high performing elementary schools, but parents say their motivation was to avoid sending their child to some of the state's lowest performing middle schools.
