5k Continues Healing Process for Friends, Family of Slain Mother

Walking, running, some even pushing strollers or riding bikes, all to honor a mother killed in Lonoke County last year. It's a case that shocked many in this community to the core. Deputies say Sharae Bryant was shot and killed by her husband outside their Austin home December 19th.
CABOT, AR -- Walking, running, some even pushing strollers or riding bikes, all to honor a mother killed in Lonoke County last year.

It's a case that shocked many in this community to the core.  Deputies say Sharae Bryant was shot and killed by her husband outside their Austin home December 19th.

Organizers say about 500 people were on hand Saturday to honor Bryant with the sport she loved and to help raise money for her children she left behind.

"We knew that this would be the only way to honor her," said Shelly Clopper, who helped organize the event. "Sharae was a runner and this is something she loved to do."

Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley is a perfect example of why this case has rattled so many in a community where there aren't many strangers.

He  graduated high school with Bryant and her husband, Charlie, the man accused of killing her, was an auxiliary deputy with his department.

Staley was the first official on scene that day.

"I'll just tell you this was one of the most tragic events I've ever experienced," he said.

Saturday was another step towards healing.

All ages participated in the 5k race, even kids.

"She has four children that need to be supported for the rest of their lives," Clopper said.

Throughout the day donations poured in.  All proceeds from the race went to Bryant's relatives now raising four kids between the ages of two and 16.

"We wanted to do what we could for her and her family," Clopper said.

Clopper and the other organizers are talking about doing the event every year to make sure the children continue to to be cared for.

This year, event organizers say they raised just over $19,000 .

Meantime, Charlie Bryant is being held at the Faulkner County Jail.  He is charged with capitol murder.
