Aerial Video: Accidents Shutdown Parts of I-55 in Arkansas

Problems driving on icy roadways create extreme traffic problems.
MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, AR - Accidents along Interstate 55 in eastern Arkansas forced officials to shutdown part of the roadway Monday night.

The closure took effect in both directions shortly after 9 p.m., according to posts on the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department's Twitter page. However, our newsroom received calls about the backed up traffic in the area a couple of hours before that.

The social media messages noted a shutdown in both directions and said the southbound lanes opened up again shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

There's no word on any injuries.

Due to the traffic backups there, travel is discouraged on Interstate 40 to Memphis due to stalled traffic as far back as Brinkley.

Additional info: Arkansas National Guard officers on standby in Searcy have been sent to Forrest City to help get Arkansas State Police troopers and Arkansas Highway Police officers to accident scenes on I-40 because their cruisers cannot get there.
