Arkansas Prison Inmate Found Dead in Suicide

The body of Steven E. Hill Jr., 24, an inmate at Varner SuperMax, was found in his cell at 2:50 a.m. on Monday by security staff delivering breakfast.
LINCOLN COUNTY, AR - An Arkansas prison inmate has been found dead in his single-man cell.

The body of Steven E. Hill, Jr., 24, an inmate at Varner SuperMax, was found at 2:50 a.m. on Monday by security staff delivering breakfast, according to the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC). 

The ADC says Hill hanged himself by a sheet from the air vent.

He was serving a sentence of 62 years and six months. He came to ADC as a new commitment on Aug. 7, 2007. He was serving a 30-year initial sentence for a rape conviction in Craighead County and a 30-year consecutive sentence of criminal attempt capital murder, also from Craighead County. 

Additionally, Hill had a 10-year concurrent sentence for sexual assault second degree from Mississippi County and a 2 1/2 – year consecutive sentence for battery second degree from Lincoln County. 

Hill would have become eligible for parole on Aug. 7, 2043.
