New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Houston Astros right fielder George Springer was named the top rookie in the American League for the month of May.

Springer has been a beacon of hope for the lowly Astros this season, and earned his first career honor of any kind thanks to hitting .294 with 10 home runs, four doubles, 25 runs batted in and 13 walks over 26 contests.

The 24-year-old right-handed hitter fell one off the franchise rookie record for homers in May set by Jim Wynn in 1969. He's the first Houston player to win Rookie of the Month since Hunter Pence in May 2007.

Others considered for the honor included Red Sox infielder Xander Bogaerts, Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka and White Sox reliever Jake Petricka.
