Bobby Portis Invited to Big Man Camp

One of just 10 collegiate players selected, Arkansas men’s basketball sophomore forward Bobby Portis has been invited to the Nike Elite Youth Basketball (EYBL) Big Man Skills Academy on June 23-25 in Union, N.J.

FAYETTEVILLE, AR – One of just 10 collegiate players selected, Arkansas men’s basketball sophomore forward Bobby Portis has been invited to the Nike Elite Youth Basketball (EYBL) Big Man Skills Academy on June 23-25 in Union, N.J.

It will be Portis’ second appearance at the camp, as he attended the 2012 camp which at the time was called the Amare Stoudemire Nike Skills Academy. The three-day camp will feature NBA stars Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins, who along with NBA coaches will help instruct the top 10 collegiate and top 20 high school big men.

Prior to the start of Arkansas’ two NIT games, Portis was named to the All-SEC second team and SEC All-Freshmen team while also earning a spot on the USBWA All-District VII team. Portis responded to those honors by posting back-to-back double-doubles in the NIT against South Alabama and at California en route to breaking the Arkansas freshman single-season record for rebounds with 230.

The rebound record wasn’t the only Arkansas freshman benchmark that Portis broke in 2013-14, as three-time SEC Freshman of the Week scored 35 points against Alabama at Bud Walton Arena on Feb. 5, dethroning the 21-year record held by current Director of Student-Athlete Development Scotty Thurman. Portis scored 29 of Arkansas’ first 35 points in the record-breaking night, hitting 14-of-17 from the field, while also adding nine rebounds and a season-best six blocks. The 35-point night was the most by a Razorback since 2002, and the third-most points scored by an SEC player in 2013-14.

Portis finished his rookie campaign with averages of 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per night. His rebounding efforts ranked tied for seventh in the SEC, while he was sixth in blocks per game, both of which were team-bests. Portis reached double figures 23 times, accumulating a team-high five doubles while leading the way on the glass in 16 contests. Out of his team-leading 54 blocks, 35 came in SEC play which is good for a tie for sixth in program history in an SEC single-season. Portis also added a team-high 86 offensive caroms, 50 assists and 35 steals.
