Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Cardinals have activated infielder Mark Ellis off the 15-day disabled list.

Ellis began the season on the DL because of left knee patella tendinitis and was on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis.

The 36-year-old veteran signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals in December and appeared in 12 games during spring training. He hit .270 with six homers and 48 RBI in 126 games last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ellis is a career .265 hitter with 105 home runs and 538 RBI in 1,362 career games with Oakland (2002-11), Colorado (2011) and the Dodgers (2012-13).

The Cardinals optioned infielder Pete Kozma to Triple-A Memphis following Monday's game against Milwaukee.

Kozma, the Cards' starting shortstop last season, was relegated to a utility role after the signing of Jhonny Peralta and had appeared in just four games this season.
