Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Creighton forward Doug McDermott was named the National Player of the Year by Sporting News on Tuesday.

McDermott has had a tremendous senior season. After deciding to stay in school and lead Creighton into its first season in the Big East Conference, McDermott leads the nation in scoring with 26.5 points per game. He's scored 20 points or more in 26-of-30 games this season, including a career-high 45 points in his regular-season finale on Saturday against Providence.

He's currently ranked seventh in NCAA history with 3,011 career points, 48 points from passing Keydren Clark (Saint Peter's) for sixth place, and is one of three men all-time with at least 3,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

McDermott is the first Big East player to win the award since St. John's forward Walter Berry in 1985-86.
