Crime Alert: Pulaski County Jail Forced to Release Many They Arrest

Right now the Maumelle Police Department says they are forced to release the non-violent arrestees.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - A closed Pulaski County Jail is creating an "unfortunate" situation for local police departments as they're forced to release many of the people they arrest.

Right now the Maumelle Police Department for example says they are forced to release the non-violent arrestees. The chief says it goes against many of the ideals of law enforcement and holding people accountable for their actions.

He says generally now, the person is brought in, processed and cited but then released back to the streets rather than being sent to Pulaski County Jail.

"The jail being completely closed is a bit of a misnomer but yeah unfortunately for misdemeanants and non-violent felons we're pretty much cutting them loose," says Chief Sam Williams.

They do say that the county jail has still worked with them to make sure violent offenders have a bed. The Pulaski County Jail has been closed since April 29.

Today they're still near capacity leaving space for only violent offenders.
