Deputies: Beaten, Kidnapped Sebastian Co. Woman Escapes

The 34-year-old victim was able to make a run for it at a Mena gas station thanks to nearby people who helped her.
SEBASTIAN COUNTY, AR - A suspect is in jail and a Hackett woman is recovering after escaping from a man who beat and then kidnapped her.

That's according to the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office (SCSO), which says the 34-year-old victim was taken from her home around 8:45 Sunday evening and driven more than 70 miles away to Mena.

Her family reportedly witnessed the incident.

In Mena, when her captor stopped at a gas station, the woman ran to another vehicle for help and the driver took her away from the scene and called police.

Deputies describe the suspect, Jerald Lavelle Brewer, 38, of Nashville (Howard County), as an acquaintance of the victim.

The SCSO says the vehicle in which the woman was abducted was believed to have been stolen.

A bulletin was sent to law enforcement agencies in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

At around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the Mena Police Department called the victim's mother and told her that the woman was safe. Mena Police said the woman had injuries to her throat, arms and legs, and needed to go to the hospital. Deputies say she had been struck with objects and choked by Brewer before he took her away from her home against her will.

Brewer, meanwhile, had driven away from Mena when the woman escaped. He was captured in Idabel, Oklahoma by local police. He's facing charges of Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault, and Domestic Battery. At last report, he was awaiting extradition back to Arkansas.

The woman told deputies she felt that Brewer was going to kill her.

Her parents drove to Mena to bring the victim back home.
