Flu Season Could be Wrapping up in Arkansas

As the flu season ends the Health Department focuses on next year.
Little Rock, AR - The flu season in Arkansas is starting to come to a close.

This year has been an active year among those between the 25 to 64 age range.  56 flu- related deaths have been reported to the Arkansas Department of Health, with two thirds of those being in the younger age bracket.  That statistic is a switch from last year, where there were more than 60 deaths and two thirds of those were 65 and older.

As the season wraps up the Health Department is already looking to next year, with a focus on pregnant women.

"Unlike pertussis, which we recommend receiving in the last part of the pregnancy, influenza vaccination can be done anytime during the pregnancy during the flu season," said Dr. Gary Wheeler, from the Arkansas Department of Health.

In addition to the message to pregnant women, the department is already buying vaccines for next year's season.
