Fundraiser Helps with Bills for Family of Fallen Chief

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Motorcycles rumbled in to a North Little Rock church Saturday afternoon from a ride to honor a fallen firefighter.

"Some days it's just day-by-day," said Veronica Pogue, wife of former Oak Grove Fire Chief Randy Pogue.  "Other times, you just got to take it an hour at a time."

Saturday, Veronica stood with her oldest son.  In February, she stood by her husband at Little Rock's Baptist Hospital as his conditioned worsened.  He'd crashed his truck February 2nd while responding to a call.

He died February 19th.

A clerical error within board that oversees Oak Grove Fire caused the department's insurance to be canceled before the chief's crash, leaving the family with the prospect of footing his bills.

"The Baptist bill alone was just under $253,000," Pogue said.

The family's plight is bringing support from local groups which lent a helping hand in making the fundraiser a success.

"I couldn't imagine having to go through that on top of losing him,"  said Brenda Scoigletti, with Arkansas Patriot Guard.  "The best you can do is try to make the best of it."

Fellow firefighters were also there showing support, one wearing a shirt with the "Superman" symbol embroidered on the back, symbolizing the type of hero they saw in their former chief.

"It's always good to see them involved," Pogue said.  "I mean, he was there chief for over 10 years."

The poker run brought in a little more than $1,000.
