Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Rod Higgins has stepped down as president of basketball operations for the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced on Friday.

Higgins spent seven seasons with the franchise, first as general manager for four years starting in 2007 before he was promoted to president following the 2010-11 season.

Hornets chairman Michael Jordan said Higgins was "of great help" during the NBA legend's first years as majority owner of the team.

"Rod has been a consummate professional throughout his time with the team," Jordan said in a statement. "Thanks to his hard work and commitment, we have an improved roster and we are poised for success in the future."

Charlotte officially became known as the Hornets last month, adopting the name of the NBA team that formerly resided in the city. The Charlotte Bobcats were formed as an expansion team in 2004.
