CABOT, AR -- Carl Hambrick, 51, says he fought an attacker for twenty minutes before he could finally get his hands on something that would end the fight and ultimately, he says, save his life.

Early Monday morning people who live on Carol Cove in Cabot say police filled the streets.

"Right now we don't know a lot about what the details are of it,"said Cabot Police PIO Sgt. Keith Graham. "That's what our detectives are investigating. Every little piece they can find, they are talking to everybody."

Police haven't called this a homicide investigation at this point but say they can't rule anything out as they only have one side to go on.

A back porch in disarray is evidence of a struggle.

All the Cabot Police Department (CPD) would release is that Hambrick had been attacked at 1:45 in the morning.

"A guy knocked on his door," explained Sgt. Graham. "He opened the door. Next thing you know he's getting attacked with some sort of object in the head."

Steven McCraw, 24, immediately began hitting him with a metal pipe, according to Hambrick.  He was finally able to run to his laundry room where he keeps a baseball bat.

"So he grabbed it and started defending himself by hitting the other subject, " said Sgt. Graham.

Hambrick says the 24-year-old had threatened to shoot him.

Both men were sent to the hospital but the initial attacker, McCraw, did not survive.

Police say he was an acquaintance of Hambrick who was hospitalized with injuries but released Monday morning.

Hambrick is now left to answer questions as to what exactly happened that ended his attackers life.

Sgt. Graham said, "What it entailed, we're still doing an investigation on that right now."

CPD Detectives are continuing their investigation to make a determination if any charges will be filed against Hambrick.
