Large Cache of Guns, Ammo Seized in Newport

Deputies say one suspect in the illegal weapons operation has surrendered, more arrests expected.
NEWPORT, AR - The Jackson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) has busted up what it calls an illegal weapons operation, making one arrest so far and anticipating more to come.

The JCSO says its investigation had been under way for months when it got a phone call Jan. 14 that led to deputies searching a house on Mimosa Drive in Newport.

That's where the JCSO says it seized the following:
  • 81 firearms
  • 19,000+ rounds of ammunition in assorted calibers
  • 199 semi-automatic firearm ammunition magazines (clips) in assorted calibers
  • a large stock of other firearms parts and accessories
  • materials used for manufacturing firearm silencers
  • a suspected stolen Honda 400 Foreman 4-wheeler
  • other items of evidence
“The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office works very hard in an effort to keep our citizens and youth safe, and based on the information that my investigators had received, I’m glad that we were able to initiate this investigation. It has led to the seizure of a very large cache of weapons and ammunition that will not end up on the streets of Newport and Jackson County,” says Sheriff David Lucas.

On Wednesday, the JCSO says Donald M. Boyster, 69, of Newport turned himself in at the sheriff's office.

Boyster was charged with Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons, Criminal Use of Prohibited Weapon, and Possession of a Defaced Firearm. He appeared before Jackson County District Judge Barbara Griffin and was ordered to appear in the Circuit Court of Jackson County on Feb. 4.

His bond was set at $10,000.
