Majestic Hotel Fire Follow-Up Meeting

The City of Hot Springs held the meeting to answer some commonly asked questions.
HOT SPRINGS, AR (News release) -

Post-demolition issues
  • The city will initiate condemnation of the yellow brick portion of the Majestic Hotel, with Board of Directors consideration to be placed on the March 18 agenda.
  • The city will contact ADEQ to request an environmental assessment of the yellow brick building debris.
  • The city will obtain a copy of a structural engineer’s report recently completed at the owner’s request.
  • Debris removal is the property owner’s responsibility (Garrison Hassenflu of Kansas City, MO). The city wants the property owner to expedite debris removal.
  • All contacts with the property owner are being made by City Attorney Brian Albright.

Air Quality
  • The city has provided ADEQ contacts to Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts (ASMSA) officials so the latter can discuss any concerns directly with ADEQ.

Water Quality
  •  The city’s Stormwater Division, in cooperation with a city-contracted engineering firm, has taken samples of Hot Springs Creek after the Majestic fire, and will re-test this week for water quality if needed.
  • Hot Springs Municipal Utilities’ drinking water intake is upstream of Hot Springs Creek, so there are no concerns about drinking water quality.
  • Recreational use of the creek is discouraged until Stormwater gives the “all clear,” probably later this week.
