New Approach to Diminish Crime in Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, AR -- Pine Bluff police use a new tactic to curb crime in the city.

It's called the High Point Initiative -- founded by officers from the High Point, North Carolina, police department.

With this approach, violent offenders are paired with community members to connect them with positive programs -- like getting their GED and finding a job.

Police began using the technique earlier this year.

They believe it's already helped in diminishing the number of violent crimes taking place there.

"We can eradicate the situation within our community. We'll become a safer place when your children and parents can get out and walk and play. You don't have to worry about a level of violent crime that our citizens have had to worry about in the past," said Kelvin Sergeant, chief deputy of the Pine Bluff Police Department.

The program works with offenders on parole and on probation.
