Phone Scam Targets Entergy Customers

Caller claims an unpaid bill must be paid within 45 minutes or power will be turned off.
HOT SPRINGS, AR - The Garland County Sheriff's Office (GCSO) is warning Entergy customers about a new scam that targets them.

The GCSO says the victim is called by a person claiming to be from Entergy, who tells them they have an unpaid bill that must be paid within 45 minutes or their power will be disconnected.

A victim of the scam told the GCSO that on Jan. 24 her husband received such a call at their business about an unpaid bill amounting to $986.23. The victim said when the phone number was called back she was told that paying with a credit card would take two days to process and then told to go to Walmart and buy two Green Dot money pack scratchoff cards. She was instructed to call back with the numbers on the cards to take care of the payment and avoid a disconnection.

At that point, the victim contacted Entergy because they suspected there may have been a problem when payments made in previous months were possibly posted to the wrong account. Entergy told the woman her account was in good standing and had always been.

The GCSO was also notified by a second victim of the scam claiming she owed the same amount of $986.23.
