"Saggy Pants" Offenders Face Hefty Fines in Pine Bluff

A Pine Bluff alderman is going to the extreme tonight to not only improve the image of his city, but teenagers as well.
PINE BLUFF, AR - A Pine Bluff alderman is going to the extreme to not only improve the image of his city, but teenagers as well.

The problem, according to him, is saggy pants.

Some say it's a fashion statement, others says it's just plain offensive.

"I think it's just a respect thing, that's what I think," says Delord Sheppard.

Sheppard, 23, has mixed feelings on the issue of sagging pants that in most cases, expose underwear.

"I'm a respectable person, but I think if they want to sag then let them sag. But I say I'm for it because you have to respect the elderly people in the world," says Sheppard.

But Pine Bluff Alderman Steven Mays says there's a bigger issue that needs to be addressed.

"Some citizens who want to see a difference in our teenagers and youth as far as the sagging pants issue, many of them are really just tired of it, especially our older and they want something done," says Mays.

Which is why Mays hopes his ordinance is voted on at Monday night's city council meeting.

"All I want to do is reach out a hand to our youth and our teenagers to let them know that somebody cares, and help them to be more productive in our city. If we are ever going to pass this ordinance, the time is now," says Mays.

If passed, police will first warn the person to hike their pants up. If it happens again, they could be issued a citation.

Delord likes the idea, but feels it will be difficult to enforce.

"If you can pull it up while the police are around, you can keep them pulled up at all times, so I think it's negatives and positives with both," says Sheppard.

Now it's up to the city council to decide if this popular trend will stay or go.

The ordinance is expected to be voted on for final adoption Monday night at Pine Bluff's City Council meeting.
