Saturday Night's Homicide Marks 29th So Far This Year

Saturday night's homicide is the 29th so far this year in Little Rock. Activists are speaking out about the rise in crime.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Another homicide in Little Rock puts this year's number of homicides at 29 and some are worried that it's only July.

A search of our archives pulled up 4 shootings near Baseline Rd. in just the past few months, two of those resulting in a death.

Saturday night there was another shooting. Marco Avila, 31, died in the incident that happened right off of Baseline Road.

Little Rock Police were dispatched to 8911 Victoria Dr. around 10 Saturday night. When they arrived they found Avila shot in the torso in the front of the house. Neighbors say it sounded like fireworks, then the police showed up.

Witnesses say they saw 4 male suspects run from the house but police say they are still trying to identify them.

Now local Stop the Violence advocate Rev. Benny Johnson says enough is enough.

"It's 29 too many. one is too many and it's just very frustrating to see our community going down like this. If it keeps on like this we will be at a record setting pace and it's time for our community to step up," says Johnson.

Johnson will be meeting with the Governor's Office on Monday in hopes of having a task force formed to patrol the Baseline Rd. area. This will be the second time in a week he's knocked on the governor's door asking for help.
