Search Continues In Morning For Missing Fisherman

Game and Fish officers are searching for an elderly fisherman who's boat capsized Friday afternoon.
CONWAY, AR -- The search for the body of a Conway fisherman continues tonight.

Arkansas Game and Fish officers say the 59-year-old man's boat capsized on Beaverfork Lake during Friday's storm.

The last anyone heard from John Sanders was at about 12:30 Friday afternoon.

Around 6:00, on that same day, another fisherman found Sander's capsized boat in the lake.

Now, search crews are doing whatever is necessary to bring Sanders back home to his family.

His friend, Pastor Willy Johnson, said, "It's just a hard thing you know, it just doesn't seem real."

Pastor Johnson is still in shock about what happened to his good friend.

He said (about Sanders) "He spent so much time with his grandchildren. He would always have them at church."

Johnson stood near the water this afternoon praying and waiting for word on Sanders.

Corporal Ross Spurlock -- with Arkansas Game and Fish -- is one of the men helping to give that word and closure to family and friends.

He's been using sonar, sweeping the lake since late Friday night.

Divers then check out the water for any "hits".

But so far, they have not recovered Sanders' body.

Corporal Spurlock said, "We do whatever we can. We'll be here until he's found, that's what the Game and Fish job is."

Johnson is grateful so many people are searching for his friend and he's confident Sanders will be found.

He said, "He's going to be missed by a lot of people."

Sanders just retired from the Conway Sanitation Department less than a month ago.

His friend says he was looking forward to spending retirement with his grand kids, playing his keyboard and fishing.

The search for his body will resume Sunday morning.
