Arkansas 20/20 Take Back and Food Drive

Goals for this year's event: collect 20,000 pounds of pills and food for 20,000 meals.
LITTLE ROCK, AR- This Saturday, the Alliance will be participating in Arkansas's eighth Prescription Drug Take Back and Food Drive. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Arkansas law enforcement agencies are hosting more than 170 sites across the state where people may return potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. This year's Take Back will also, for the first time, include a food drive component at some locations. Those dropping off prescription drugs are also being asked to contribute non-perishable food to help local food banks and food pantries restock their shelves.  Prescription Abuse FACTS:

Over 60% of teens report that getting drugs from family medicine cabinets is easy.
More than 70% of abused prescription drugs have been obtained from family and friends.
Since the first Take Back event in 2010, Arkansas has collected more than 41 tons of pills.
Since 2010, the youth prescription abuse rate in Arkansas has declined each year.

The take back program is designed to prevent pill abuse and theft by offering Arkansans the opportunity to rid their homes of unneeded medications. Collected drugs are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, and the service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked by participating law enforcement agencies.

Hunger FACTS:

Four of the nation's five most food insecure states are Mississippi (#1), Alabama (#3), Louisiana (#4), and Arkansas (#5)
28.2% of Arkansas households with children experience food insecurity
Almost 1 in 5 families without children are food insecure.

Hunger organizations will be set up alongside law enforcement officers at selected Take Back sites to collect food for families in need. Food donations will then be distributed to hungry families in the same communities from which they were collected.
