Charleston, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tom Michael has been hired by Eastern Illinois University to be the school's new director of intercollegiate athletics.
Michael, the senior associate AD at the University of Illinois, will officially assume his role at EIU on Aug. 11. He replaces Barbara Burke, who left for a position at Tulane in April.
"I leave Illinois with a tremendous amount of respect for the training and experiences it has provided for me both as a Division I student-athlete and as a Division I athletic administrator," Michael said in a statement.
Michael has served in his current role at Illinois since 2012. He joined the school's athletic department in 1996 as an academic counselor and has worked for the past 12 years in administration, serving as both an associate AD and assistant AD for student services.
"Tom Michael's experience, integrity, and commitment to the academic development of student-athletes are excellent," EIU president William Perry said in a Monday release announcing the news. "I am very pleased he is joining the EIU family."
Michael played four years for the Fighting Illini basketball program from 1991-94.
