Health Benefits Of The Mediteranean Diet

If you're looking for ways to lose weight you might want to try the Mediterranean diet. Donna Terrell explains in today's Family Health.
Research says the Mediterranean diet has many health benefits.

Now a Spanish study suggests eating this way may also protect against Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD.

Researchers studied 7,500 people with an average age in their late 60's.

Participants were split into three groups, one followed the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil,  and one followed the diet supplemented with nuts, and the third group was counseled on a low-fat diet.

Results show both Mediterranean diet groups lowered their risk of PAD.

Registered Dietician Julia Zumpano with the Cleveland Clinic says, "you gain the most protection from a Mediterranean diet because it does provide the lowest in saturated fat, highest in fiber, highest in omega-3, than any of the other comparable large-scale diets."

Findings appear online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
