Police say a neighbor's bull mastiff mauled the 75-year-old victim while she was out walking Thursday morning.
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, AR (News release) - A Hot Springs Village (HSV) resident was attacked and mauled by a neighbor’s dog early this morning.

The victim, Joan Kappen, 75, was taken to Mercy Hospital but later died of injuries sustained in the attack.

Kappen was attacked by at least one dog, a bull mastiff, as she was walking on Ornado Lane. The dog’s owner is Emily Coy, of Hot Springs Village.

According to HSV Police Chief Gary Adams, the dog's owner was away and another woman was taking care of the dog.

The woman who was taking care of the dog tried to get control of the animal and was also attacked. The extent of her injuries are not known.

HSV  police, fire, and LifeNet personnel responded to the scene.

The dog was picked up by Hot Springs Village Animal Control and later euthanized at a local animal clinic.

Kappen’s body has been sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab to determine exact cause of death.
