Judge Says Arkansas Scientist Must Remain in Custody

63-year-old Wengui Yan is charged in an alleged conspiracy to steal trade secrets from a rice company.

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A Federal Judge has ruled a Stuttgart man charged in an alleged rice conspiracy must remain in custody.

Wengui Yan is a research geneticist accused of stealing trade secrets from a Kansas company.

Yan and another scientist are accused of giving rice seeds that had been developed by the company to a delegation from China.

Judge J. Thomas Ray made the ruling in a detention hearing in federal court Friday.

Yan and his co-defendant are scheduled to appear in federal court in Kansas on Tuesday.
