Maintaining Highways in Winter

The cost to maintain highways in the winter is around $6 million.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- When it comes to snow and ice removal, highway leaders say there's no limit to funding.

Crews spent Wednesday morning treating roads and bridges to make sure the highway remains safe for driving.

On average, the department spends around $6 million each budget year on road maintenance during the winter.

Some years, it spends more, while other years it's less.

Highway leaders said it's a priority, and they'll readjust the budget if necessary.

"Something will have to give somewhere, but it's not the state's motorists that will be without any services.  We will maintain the state's highway," said Danny Straessle, spokesman for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

Last year's snow and ice removal cost the state around $5 million.
