Lake Buena Vista, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Roger Angell, a senior editor at The New Yorker magazine, was named Tuesday as the recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award.

Angell, 93, was elected in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America and will be honored at the Baseball Hall of Fame next summer.

Primarily a magazine and book writer, Angell is the first Spink Award winner who was never a member of the BBWAA.

Angell, who still works for the magazine, said he was "surprised to find how much I secretly hoped this would happen because I was very moved and startled and extremely pleased," according to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Past winners include Ring Lardner, Grantland Rice, Damon Runyon and Peter Gammons. Philadelphia writer Paul Hagen was last year's recipient.
