FAYETTEVILLE, AR – After posting his second double-double in non-conference play with a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, Arkansas men’s basketball freshman Bobby Portis was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, by the league office.
The weekly award is the second of the season for Portis, who is just the second Razorback in program history to win the accolade multiple times. Current Houston Rocket guard Patrick Beverley won the award three times in 2006-07, and went on to be named the SEC Freshman of the Year.
Portis’ 19 points against UTSA came on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting night from the field that resulted in the Little Rock native moving into second in the SEC in field goal percentage (.591). It marked the fourth straight game that Portis has led the Razorbacks in scoring and a team-best sixth time this year. Portis also finished with three blocks and three assists to help the Razorbacks hit the century mark for the third time during its seven-game win streak.
On the year, Portis is second on the team in scoring at 12.8 points per night, while leading the way in rebounding at 6.2, figures that rank 22nd and 15th in the SEC, respectively. Portis has reached double figures in nine consecutive games entering SEC action and has hit 21 of his last 24 from the field over the last three games, including his last 20 from inside the three-point line.
Arkansas will head into Wednesday’s SEC opener at Texas A&M (9-4) on a seven-game win streak, which equals the program’s longest under head coach Mike Anderson. The game will be televised by Fox Sports South starting at 8 p.m.
