Tornado Touches Down In Southeast Arkansas

EF-1 Tornado hits small town in Chicot County.
CHICOT COUNTY, AR -- A tornado touched down in southeast Arkansas leaving behind a massive trail of destruction.

Folks with the National Weather Service tell us the area where the tornado touched down is in a small town called Halley, that's in Chicot County.

According to Chicot County Emergency Management Coordinator -- Mike Morgan -- the tornado destroyed five homes and damaged ten others in the area.

Morgan says he lives just feet away from where the tornado hit.

He said, "At that time, I looked out and grabbed my family and we ran outside and got in the storm cellar. About two minutes later you could feel the pressure in your ears popping and I could tell we had a tornado above us."

Morgan says two people were hurt when high winds blew over some tractor trailers in Chicot County, but their injuries are not life threatening.

The National Weather Service rated the tornado an EF-1, but when it crossed the Mississippi River it reached an EF-2 intensity.

Electricity went out in hundreds of homes in the area, but tonight the lights are back on for most Entergy customers.
