Valparaiso, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Valparaiso fired football coach Dale Carlson on Sunday.
The move came a day after the Crusaders suffered a 72-12 loss to Butler.
Carlson, who was in his fourth season with the football program, departed with a 3-40 record.
"We appreciate all the effort Dale Carlson has made during his time at Valpo to bring quality student-athletes to our campus that represent the university through their hard work on the field and in the classroom," Valparaiso athletic director Mark LaBarbera said.
"But the on-field results during his tenure have not met the expectations of the university, and consequently, we have decided it best for the future of our football program that we move in a different direction."
The Crusaders are 1-9 overall this season, including a 1-6 mark in the Pioneer Conference. Their lone win came Sept. 28 against Campbell in overtime.
Assistant coach Mike Gravier will serve as head coach for Valparaiso's final game Saturday at home against Dayton. The school said a national search for the next head coach will begin immediately.
