Original story (Jan. 7):
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Little Rock Firefighters confirm one person is dead after an apartment caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 3401 Fair Park Blvd. around 4 p.m.

Minutes before fire crews rushed to the building at the South Oaks apartment complex, resident Dereck Oshin was inside when he heard someone yell.

"There was all the smoke coming out of the apartment right across from us," Oshin said. "I decided to run and bang on the other neighbors' doors and try to get them out."

He says he dialed 911 as he dashed door to door.

"Get get out, everyone needs to get out," he said.

When fire crews smashed smoky windows and searched the scene, they found not everyone heard the warnings.

An unidentified person inside the apartment where the fire originated was found dead.

"Downstairs apartment had been charred... a lot of heat and smoke throughout downstairs apartment vented out bedroom window," said Capt. Jason Weaver with the Little Rock Fire Department. "It's surprising cause no one thought she was still in there. Everyone thought she left."

The flames and smoke forced Oshin and his neighbors into the cold and soon new apartments.

As they accounted for loved ones and anxiously wait to learn what remains, Oshin says they're most upset about the loss of life.

"Worst of all I think...I lost one of my neighbors," he said.
