At an afternoon news conference, race director Gina Pharis said all runners were rerouted due to weather conditions.
Fox16 reported the race was cancelled after learning police told runners the course was closed. Fox16 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Baskin tweeted an image from the course of a volunteer holding up a sign that read "Event Alert System: Extreme. Event Cancelled."
Participants informed Fox16 that police told them the course had been closed. Many runners were rerouted to a Walmart location on Cantrell where they were picked up by buses.
A news release from the Little Rock Marathon noted the following:
"After careful consideration for the safety of our participants, the 2014 Little Rock Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K were rerouted. Because of the unusual and extreme weather conditions we are experiencing today, we have enacted our weather cancellation policy, which has been communicated to all participants throughout the entire registration process."
Little Rock Marathon organizers say refunds will not be offered since the event was rerouted, not cancelled.
