Double Murder near Batesville, Suspect Arrested

BATESVILLE, AR – A Cotton Plant man is under arrest for a double homicide near Batesville.

The Independence County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) says it happened Saturday night around 8:00, just northwest of the city.

Deputies were called to 295 Dry Run Circle on a shooting and found the victims in two places.

Omar Scales, 25 was found inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the left side. John L. Weeams, 47, was found inside the house on the couch with a gunshot wound to the upper chest. The ICSO says he had a gun right beside him.

Both were taken to the White River Medical Center where Weeams was pronounced dead and Scales died a short time later.

Akeem Lewis, 23, of Cotton Plant, is jailed in the case. He is awaiting formal charges from the prosecutor.
