Update: Man critical after officer involved shooting, Little Rock Police release preliminary information

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A man is hospitalized after being shot by a Little Rock police officer Saturday morning.

The unnamed man is reported to be in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

An officer received minor injuries at the time of the shooting.

Police initially responded to a report of a car being used without the permission of the owner at a home in the 1400 block of Cleveland Street.

Officers arrived and spoke with the driver of the vehicle.

Officers approached both the driver side and passenger side of the vehicle.

The man was asked to provide proof of ownership.

Police say the man attempted to show proof, but then began to argue with the officers.

He was asked to get out of the vehicle.

Police say the driver put the vehicle in gear and began to leave.

During a struggle, police say an officer got his hand and firearm stuck in the door of the car, and at that time the officer discharged the weapon.

The officer was dragged 15 to 20 feet before he was freed from the moving vehicle.

The officer’s weapon remained in the vehicle.

The car then went north on Cleveland Street and east on 12th before colliding with a utility pole in the 6100 block.

When officers arrived at the scene of the wreck, they found the driver had been shot in the leg.

Aid was rendered until an ambulance arrived and took the man to the hospital.

Police say that since this incident involves an officer discharging a weapon, an internal investigation has begun.

A separate criminal investigation is also underway, according to LRPD.
