Update: Brinkley sergeant arrested for rape pleads not guilty

PRAIRIE COUNTY, Ark. – A former officer with the Brinkley Police Department appeared in court today.

Sgt. John Shumard pleaded not guilty. He faces rape, sexual indecency with a child and sexual assault charges.

UPDATE: 

Authorities released more information in the rape case against a Brinkley Police Officer. 

At the time of the alleged crime in 2008, Sgt. John Shumard was a deputy with the Prairie County Sheriff’s Office. 

The victim at the time was 12 years old. 

The sheriff at the time offered Shumard a polygraph test. He refused and was then fired. 

There was not enough evidence to arrest him at the time. 

Eleven years later, Shumard was arrested Monday morning at the Brinkley Police Department while he was on duty. 

He bonded out and is expected back in court May 20.

BRINKLEY, Ark. – A sergeant with the Brinkley Police Department was arrested Monday morning for rape, according to the Prairie County Sheriff’s Office. 

Sergeant John Shumard was taken into custody by Arkansas State Police and the Prairie County Sheriff’s Office in connection to a rape case that is 11 years old. 

A $15,000 bond was set for Shumard; he has already bonded out.
