Lowell, AR — – A Northwest Arkansas Fortune 500 is going out of its way to hire thousands of veterans.
“They put themselves out there in ways that I personally never did, so it’s a huge accomplishment for us to be able to offer them these positions.” said Lloyd Trader, the Vice President of Driver Personnel at J.B. Hunt.
J.B. Hunt is on a mission to hire 10,000 veterans by 2020.
“Veterans have a known work ethic and J.B. Hunt is really a hard working place and we need veterans, people with that same mentality and spirit that can come in here and work towards that.” said Eric Airola, J.B. Hunt’s Senior Director of Human Resources.
The initiative started in 2014, That’s when Army National Guard Vet Jana Detherage got on board.
“I was attracted simply because J.B. Hunt had a reputation of not only hiring veterans but being able to make the connection between what I did in the military and utilizing those skills here on a day to day basis.” said Detherage.
Detherage is a part of the Veterans Employee Resource Group which helps vets find the best way to use what they learned in the military at work.
“With a veteran when you’re holding that resume, sometimes those words on there don’t always translate to the civilian sector. So being able to speak to someone that can see the different job titles, relate to what you’ve been through and be able to help find that path alongside you is something I’m very honored to do.” Detherage said.
Part of their recruitment technique includes going out to different military bases. This year they are expected to hire twice as many veteran drivers than they did last year.
“We look for drivers from all across the country and we have several different types of driving jobs that would appeal to veterans.” said Airola.
J.B. Hunt officials say though 69 percent of their company consists of drivers, they have other positions as well that will fit any military members’ skill set. “
“We also look for non-driver positions so that could be managers it could be applications developers it could be people who do finances mechanics for our equipment.” Airola said.
As for Detherage, she said working for a company that goes out of their way to hire veterans — just like herself — makes her even more passionate to work for J.B. Hunt.
“These are a lot of individuals that have made sacrifices so to be a part of a company that recognizes those sacrifices honors those sacrifices and then provides an opportunity for growth and career and advancement to further take those skill sets, it means a lot.” said Detherage.
