BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) – A Bella Vista man, who was sentenced to death for killing his six-year-old son, will get a new trial, after a ruling made by the Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday, April 18.

In November 2016, a Benton County Circuit Court judge sentenced Mauricio Torres to death.

The state high court reversed Torres’ case for a new trial in a 4-3 ruling. The justices ruled that Arkansas authorities couldn’t justify rape for the capital murder conviction because the assault happened in Missouri.  The child died at an Arkansas hospital one day after the assault.
